A Reno teacher is among those awarded the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Zan Coonce, a fifth-grade teacher at Brown Elementary School, was one of 100 teachers and mentors to receive the award during a White House ceremony Wednesday.
Coonce began her career with the Washoe County School District as a substitute in 1995 and became a full-time teacher in 1999.
She is a member of the technology committee, where she established a technology plan for the school and secured a $50,000 grant to purchase new computers.
The annual award is given to the best pre-college science and math teachers from across the country.
Winners receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.
