Nevada to seek waiver from No Child Left Behind mandates
February 1, 2012 - 2:01 am
CARSON CITY -- Nevada will apply for a waiver from federal No Child Left Behind education requirements this month.
State Department of Education officials say administrators have been meeting with school districts, community leaders, national experts and others over the past four months to come up with an acceptable alternative.
Department officials say Nevada's waiver application will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education by Feb. 21.
Nevada and other states say the federal requirements on student achievement don't adequately reflect progress made to improve math and reading scores.
Nevada officials say a state plan will be tailored to the specific needs of individual schools and school districts.
