Strawberry Fire more than halfway contained

The Strawberry Fire at Great Basin National Park is more than halfway contained, officials said Saturday.

The 4,600-acre fire at the national park located 300 miles northeast of Las Vegas, is 52 percent contained, according to a release from the Great Basin Incident Management Team 7.

More firefighters were added to the team Saturday, bringing the total number of firefighters to 434, the release said. In addition, four helicopters, nine engines and one bulldozer have been deployed.

A lightning strike is to blame for the blaze that began Monday. Wheeler Peak Campground and Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive above the Lower Lehman Creek Campground are closed.

Fire officials hope to have the blaze fully contained by next Friday, a park official said Friday.
