Police: Standoff ends in suicide

KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Authorities believe a Lake Havasu City man committed suicide early Friday after a domestic violence episode unfolded over the course of several hours.

City police Sgt. Troy Stirling said police responded to a residence in the 41000 block of Challenger Drive on the western edge of town about 1:30 a.m. after a woman called for help, complaining she had been physically assaulted by her husband.

Stirling said attempts to speak with 42-year-old Joey Lively by telephone failed. He said Lively fired one shot in the air and another at an officer as he fled into the desert.

"The officer chose not to shoot at Lively due to several occupied residences in the line of fire," Stirling said.

SWAT team personnel and a helicopter were used to try to contain Lively but officers found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound about 8 a.m., he said.

Stirling said a handgun was found next to Lively's body.
