Bill to streamline concealed weapon permit process clears Senate committee

CARSON CITY — A Nevada state senator trying to streamline the process for people packing heat unbeknownst to the public made progress as his bill cleared committee.

Republican Sen. James Settelmeyer of Minden presented Senate Bill 76 to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, and the members voted unanimously to pass it after some discussion.

The bill would eliminate the categorization of semiautomatic pistols and revolvers and instead refer to them collectively as handguns in statute. If passed, there would be no change to the length of class required to obtain a carry concealed weapons permit.

Currently, should an individual register their permit for a revolver, then buy a semiautomatic, they would be required to take more training. This bill repeals the need for separate training for a revolver or semiautomatic.
