Concealed weapons bill dies in Senate

A bill that would have allowed teachers with the appropriate training to carry concealed weapons on school grounds died on a 4-2 against vote Thursday in the state Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee.

Senate Bill 286, sought by state Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, was proposed both as a counter measure to potential terrorism and as a deterrent to school violence.

But law enforcement officials objected to the bill. A Clark County School District representative said that if there is a concern about potential terrorism, then more funding should be provided for school police.
