COMEBACK DERAILED

Eddie Fisher's Las Vegas comeback was one of shortest in show business, according to a former cohort.

Entertainment legend Buddy Hackett had hired Fisher to open for him in the early 1970s at the Sahara, recalled Steve Rossi, who opened for Fisher over the years with comedy partners Marty Allen and Slappy White.

During Fisher's opening night, "Eddie did 35-40 minutes and got a good response even though his throat was a little sore," said Rossi.

When Hackett came out, he gave the singing star a warm acknowledgment but announced that Fisher wouldn't be opening the second show because "I don't want to stress his throat."

An unhinged Fisher came rushing on stage, said Rossi, and protested to the point that "he started cursing Buddy, and that was the end of the comeback."

"Buddy was right. He was being respectful, but it became a really nasty scene," said Rossi, who later wrote four songs for an album Fisher put together after his divorce from Elizabeth Taylor.

Fisher died Sept. 22 from hip surgery complications. He was 82.

Rossi, who is the musical director of "Nunsense" at the Hilton, had some good news during our "Nunsense" media night chat. His longtime pal, Rich Little, is returning to the stage next month. He's taking his "Jimmy Stewart and Friends" on a six-city tour between Oct. 12 and Nov. 5, his first engagement since the death of his wife, Marie, in July.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

Andrew Norelli of Southern California won Joe Lowers' inaugural World Series of Comedy at Alexis Park on Saturday. The event attracted 101 entrants. ...

Correction: Starting this week, KSNV-TV, Channel 3 anchor Sue Manteris is off the 5 p.m. newcast. She will continue in the 6 p.m. slot "to focus and spend more time on her popular anchormom series/beat," the station said.
