Rainfall tapers off, sunny skies for weekend

The forecast for Las Vegas still calls for rain, but expect a much smaller amount than the valley received Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecaster John Adair said the majority of the rain associated with storms Wednesday and Thursday has moved east, with scattered showers expected Friday.

"The precipitation will be more on and off. We’re not expecting significant amounts," he said.

On Thursday, Las Vegas received 0.89 inches of rain, a record for any individual day in January but less than the 1 to 3 inches predicted. This week has seen 1.69 inches, and counting, of rainfall. The valley ended 2009 with only 1.59 inches of rain.

The weather service forecast this morning predicts a 50 percent chance of rain today and a 30 percent chance of rain tonight. Precipitation will taper off in the evening, and no rain is expected Saturday through Monday.

Flood advisories for Clark County were removed this morning, Adair said. Water levels for the Muddy River, near Moapa Valley, peaked in the early morning, and levels are expected to fall throughout the day.

A winter weather advisory is still in place for the mountains, with snow expected in areas as low as 3,000 to 4,000 feet.

Residents near Summerlin and the foothills of the mountains might see flurries, but Adair said no snow is expected to stick in the valley.
