Regents discontinue salary practice for fired college presidents

A policy change approved on Friday by Nevada education officials bars fired college presidents from receiving a salary after termination, a revision that fixes outdated language in the state's higher education manual.

Existing policy set by the Nevada System of Higher Education allows presidents who are fired for certain types of misconduct, such as insubordination, to continue receiving a base salary for the remainder of their contract term. The revision bans that practice, although a tenured president can still be reassigned to another paid position as a full-time faculty member.

Before implementing the policy, NSHE had already created new contract forms for three incoming presidents that included stipulations banning them from getting paid in the event of a termination. The presidents who signed the new forms now serve at the College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College and the University of Nevada, Reno.

The proposed changes mean Nevada officials won't have to waive the existing policy when approving new presidential contracts.
