Reid, Heller, introduce Douglas County land bill

CARSON CITY — A bill that would free up some federally-owned land in Douglas County and designate a wilderness area has been introduced in the U.S. Senate.

The bill called the Douglas County Conservation Act of 2013 is co-sponsored by Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller. It was introduced Tuesday.

It comes after years of discussions and negotiations between state, local and federal officials.

Other provisions of the bill would convey cultural sites to the Washoe Tribe.

Officials also said it would allow better flood control, help protect sage grouse habitat and add recreational opportunities.

Douglas County is in Northern Nevada, just south of Carson City.
