Sentencing reset for Saudi sergeant in rape case

LAS VEGAS — Sentencing has been reset to Jan. 29 for a Saudi Arabian air force sergeant who faces a minimum of 35 years to life in a Nevada state prison for raping a 13-year-old boy at a Las Vegas Strip hotel last New Year’s Eve.

Court records show the date for sentencing 24-year-old Mazen Alotaibi was pushed back from Monday.

Attorney Don Chairez says a state presentencing report recommends the mandatory 35-year sentence for kidnapping and sexual assault with a minor, and concurrent sentences on lewdness and other charges.

A jury found Alotaibi guilty in October of kidnapping and forcing sex on the boy in the bathroom of a sixth-floor room at the Circus Circus hotel, and fondling and kissing the boy on the way to the room.
