Seven children found in van; man arrested

A man who left seven children in a van on one of the hottest days of the year was arrested for suspicion of child endangerment Tuesday, Las Vegas police said.

The incident happened about 3:15 p.m. at a parking lot at 1131 East Tropicana Ave., near Maryland Parkway, said Jose Montoya, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department.

The children in the van were between the ages of 1 and 10, said Sgt. John Loretto, also with Las Vegas police. Tuesday’s high was 111 degrees.

Montoya said medical personnel treated the children for heat-related symptoms. A spokeswoman for Clark County Family Services said all of the children were taken into protective custody.

Montoya added that several dogs in the van were seized by animal control officers.

The identity of the man arrested was not released Tuesday.
