Slain Nye deputy remembered for service to country, community

A Nevada sheriff's deputy fatally shot by a gunman on his second day back to work after a military deployment to Afghanistan is being remembered as a family man who gave his life for his country and community.

Gov. Jim Gibbons was among the hundreds of people who attended the funeral service Saturday for Nye County Deputy Ian Michael Deutch. He died Monday night after being shot with an assault rifle at a home near a casino in Pahrump 60 miles west of Las Vegas.

Sgt. Stan Harvey, a chaplain's assistant who served with Deutch in Afghanistan, says the gunman didn't really take his friend's life. He says Deutch willingly sacrificed it himself when he became a deputy and served as a staff sergeant in the Nevada National Guard.
