Suspect in slaying of girl, 9, arrested

The man police say shot and killed a 9-year-old girl in June was arrested over the weekend, police said Monday.

Kenneth Reid, 20, is the second man to be arrested in the case. Previously, police arrested 27-year-old Marcus Dewayne Larry.

The two men are charged in the June 12 killing of Savannah Bullins, who was shot and killed while in her father's apartment at 2112 Sun Ave., near Cheyenne Avenue and Interstate 15.

Police said a bullet intended for Wilbert Bullins came through the wall of his apartment and struck his daughter. She died at University Medical Center.

Investigators suspect Reid fired the fatal shot, said North Las Vegas Police spokesman Sgt. Tim Bedwell.

Larry is accused of being an accomplice who helped Reid escape the scene.

Authorities suspect the men were in a dispute with Wilbert Bullins, who police said admitted that he sold marijuana from his apartment. He has not been charged in the case.

The suspects are both convicted felons with ties to local gangs, Bedwell said.

Police said not long after the shooting that they were looking for Reid but had been unable to find him. On Sunday morning, Las Vegas police responded to an unrelated call and found Reid by happenstance, Bedwell said. They contacted North Las Vegas police, who responded and arrested Reid.

Bedwell said a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun was found near Reid and seized. It is not the weapon in the slaying. Police said that firearm was a 9 mm semiautomatic.
