Suspension of clinic’s license upheld

Las Vegas eye surgery center was barred from operating until the state determines if the clinic is safe enough to take patients.

Clark County commissioners voted Tuesday to uphold the suspension of the business license for Shadow Mountain Surgical Center at 7135 W. Sahara Ave.

The county suspended the clinic's license June 9, several days after state health officials banned surgeries at the center because the owners, Dr. David Malitz and Alex Pujari, had failed to fix problems found at the site in March.

The center was fined $9,400 for 32 deficiencies found during a joint inspection by the state's licensing bureau and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Inspectors noted defects in sterilizing equipment and a lack of documentation proving that certain staff had been screened for tuberculosis.

Health officials deemed the clinic's deficiencies serious but not an immediate threat to patients.
