Tuning in the turtlecam

A five-minute video shot by a sea turtle-turned-videographer is one of the more popular videos on YouTube today. It doesn't take long to figure out the turtle has no training, but the folks at Nikon and whoever built the waterproof housing for the tiny digital camera should put their heads together and come up with a fun marketing campaign about the exploits of the camera.

A story on Yahoo News today:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100614/ap_on_re_us/us_camera_s_odyssey

tells the tale of a camera that got away and drifted from Aruba to Key West, Fla., over a six-month period. A U.S. Coast Guard investigator spotted the camera bobbing along some seashore rocks and decided to play detective after seeing the still images and video shot by the turtle, which must have thought the camera was edible. It wasn't, and the Coast Guard investigator was able to find the owner of the wayward Nikon.

The Internet played a big role in finding people to help identify those in the photos. Scubabboard.com was one of the key sites used to track down the camera owner. There's no word on the fate of the turtle or any sequels.
