Union members protest Adelson’s political donations

Union members from across the country gathered in front of the Venetian Hotel and Casino on Wednesday to protest its high-profile owner, Sheldon Adelson.

The 75-year-old chairman and chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp. donated an estimated $150 million in the last political cycle to Republican candidates across the country. He has said he will double that amount in 2016.

"He's the very poster child of what's wrong in this country," said Deborah Burger, co-president of National Nurses United.

The union held its convention in Las Vegas this week and used the opportunity to protest Adelson, while also pushing for tax reform. They back a proposal that would tax the sale of stocks and bonds.

The nurses union was joined by local union members, who held signs calling for taxes on Wall Street and chanted slogans.

The billionaire did not attend the protest.
