Week in Review: Reporter’s Notebook, June 9

WET ‘N’ WILD, THE WATER PARK THAT OPENED LATE LAST MONTH, invited reporters to tour the place before opening weekend. A reporter asked about rumors that the park had reached, or almost reached, the limit for season passes. Nonsense, the marketing people said.

Within days of its opening, though, the park put this up on its website: “The demand for season passes to Wet ’n’ Wild Las Vegas has been so overwhelming we’ve stopped selling both our Gold Passes and Season Pass for the season. We hope you understand, but this decision was made to ensure our current pass holders and future guests can enjoy a world-class water park experience throughout our 2013 Season.”

Huh. Who woulda thunk it?

TWEET OF THE WEEK: @jswatz (New York Times national reporter John Schwartz) When you’ve just trashed your Vegas hotel suite to the tune of $100K, it’s not a good time to quote Moses (included a link to a Review-Journal story about Robert Pearman, 45, a Los Angeles lawyer, who said, "I did all of this. I am responsible for all these people. Let my people go.")

DANIEL BASTINE, 28, A RAPPER ARRESTED ON THE STRIP BY undercover police officers, is accused of unlawfully reproducing music that wasn’t his. Officers who arrested him were listening to that music while he was being detained. They then razzed him about the number of YouTube followers his group, Team Dollas, had.

“There’s hookers, there’s drug addicts, there’s all sorts of creeps, and they decide to go after us? Why?” Bastine wondered.

A PLEA FOR DONATIONS TO ITS GRAVE FLAG FUND BY THE nonprofit National Order of Trench Rats was met with overwhelming support.

More than $7,000 was raised for the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, said Bill Anton, of Dugout 421, the Trench Rats. The local group is an auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans.

The demand for U.S. flags for grave sites has increased as World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans die.

Anyone can donate by making checks payable to NOTR Dugout 421 and mailing them to Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005.
