Wildlife officials caution against feeding bears

GARDNERVILLE -- State wildlife officials said they have been forced to kill a bear that was trying to break into homes in southern Douglas County.

Nevada Division of Wildlife biologist Carl Lackey said the older female bear was put down on Friday near Holbrook. He said someone had been feeding it.

Lackey said once a bear finds a food source from humans, it won't go away.

He said: "A fed bear is a dead bear."

Lackey said it was the second bear that had to be killed in Douglas County this year. The first was killed near the Heavenly Ski Resort at Lake Tahoe.
