LETTERS: President doesn’t relate to soldiers

To the editor:

I believe President Barack Obama was originally elected on the basis of getting the United States out of Iraq. Not only are there troops still in Iraq, but he escalated the war in Afghanistan and could still initiate another war in Syria, depending on how things go in the wake of Russia interceding.

The president might identify with Trayvon Martin, killed here in the United States, but he obviously does not care about the hundreds he sends to death in foreign countries. I’m tired of hearing his justification for everything he does as “the right thing to do,” regardless of what Congress or the people he supposedly represents want.

If the international community set the red line, as he states, then it should be up to the international community to defend it, not us. If this man starts a war over the objections of Congress and his people, then he should be impeached.

U.S. should strike

To the editor:

Most Americans don’t want to see the United States strike Syria, but Sen. John McCain would like an all-out war. Supply the rebels with weapons and send our troops over, too. Unfortunately, Sen. McCain wasn’t listening to any differences of opinion, instead playing video poker on his iPhone.

One reason the public doesn’t want this is because we just got out of two wars, without any funding, and our economy is just now turning around. Plus, we were told there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and we found this to be untrue. So were chemical weapons used there? Why should the United States come to the aid of another foreign country? Is there any oil involved?

Congress, not President Barack Obama, recently cut military spending through the sequester. Our budget is being done on a step-by-step method — whenever we the public are in an uproar, then Congress will vote. Student loans provide a perfect example. If a student takes out a loan, the interest rate is 3.86 percent. Republicans in Congress wanted all loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) to go to 6.85 percent, but this was the compromise.

The president has a heavy load to bear because he cares about people. We saw this in him, and that’s why he was elected, then re-elected. Out of the 1,472 people killed with chemical weapons in Syria, more than 50 percent were children. This is what President Obama thinks about. It could’ve been your son, daughter or grandchild killed for no reason except power. I think a strike in Syria is called for, because I think about the future.

Voter ID laws

To the editor:

Throughout the country, liberal Democrats are worried that voter ID laws will impact elections. What they’re really worried about is getting enough fraudulent votes to win elections. With untold millions of illegal aliens in this country, the integrity of our voter rolls is the most important issue we face, and voter ID is the best weapon we have against voter fraud.

The purported concerns about voter ID are blatant lies. Why else would the Democrats pander to illegals? Because they’re great advocates of law and order? Do they support the Constitution, because they’re so loyal to these United States? No, they want free money and entitlements that they would never get in their own country, and the Democrats are more than willing to bankrupt this country to buy their votes with tax dollars. How stupid do Democrats think we are?

Corporate politics

To the editor:

Our politicians say their votes on issues are dictated by constituents, but in truth, they vote the way millionaires and corporations dictate. Take for example Rep. Joe Heck. Eighty-six percent of his constituents want stricter gun laws, but his gun corporation donors want a no vote. Which column do you think he will check?

He’ll say why he voted against what he knows is right, but will tell us about thousands of calls for a no vote. He knows these are robo-calls sent by the National Rifle Association, but he’ll dismiss that charge. How much longer are we American voters expected to just turn the other cheek and take another monstrous slap from these bought-and-paid-for politicians.

Our country has never been more divided, and it’s time for the majority to unify and start scoring a little better. We need to do away with corporate greed, but we still have many on our team who root for the wrong side. Some on our team keep fumbling and turning the ball over to the other side. A no vote for corporate-owned politicians would sure give us an advantage at kickoff.

Tarkanian coverage

To the editor:

The Review-Journal’s coverage of Jerry Tarkanian’s induction into the National Basketball Hall of Fame left a lot to be desired. The former University of Nevada, Las Vegas basketball coach is one of the greatest sports figures in Nevada, which has had many going back to early 20th century boxers, noted football players such as Stan Heath and great coaches such as Chris Ault for his victories at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Mr. Tarkanian should have been in the Hall of Fame decades ago. His run-ins with the NCAA kept him out. But that did not stop him from producing an NCAA championship.
