NFL protests are about justice and equality
In response to Bruce Blough’s Friday letter to the editor (“Hissy fit”) about the NFL protests:
If Mr. Blough listened to anyone other than Trump supporters — namely the black athletes themselves — he’d know that the protest is not about disrespecting the flag, country or military personnel who fought for and protect it. The protest is to bring attention to the unjust, unequal treatment of minorities still occurring far too much in our country, especially in law enforcement.
I doubt if Mr. Blough would call it a “hissy fit” if he were subjected to mistreatment because he was a minority.
The mere taking of a knee has drawn national attention to a situation that has basically existed since slavery times. Peaceful protesting is legal. Instead of being so supportive of and part of the problem, why not be supportive of and part of the solution? Or is it true for Mr. Blough that “the only good black demonstration is no black demonstration”? (See: Steve Chapman’s Friday commentary.)
