Teachers aren’t the only “essential” public school employees

In his recent letter, Ed Williams states that, “Nothing is more important to a school than having qualified teachers.” I agree. But he goes on to say that, “Every other position is nonessential.” I disagree.

As a 42-year electrician and past employee of the Clark County School District, I have a question for Mr. Williams. Would the teacher be able to teach if there was no power to keep the lights on, the air conditioning cooling the rooms or the life-safety systems keeping the kids from harm’s way?

My point is that teachers could not do their jobs without the “nonessential support staff” doing their jobs. It sounds like a team effort to me.
