Secretary of State Ross Miller says he can't certify for the ballot an initiative to restrict property taxes until it survives a legal challenge by the state teacher union.
Fair enough.
In the meantime, Nevadans should marvel at the consistency of the state's two largest and powerful labor organizations -- the Culinary union and the teachers -- when it comes to opposing virtually any effort to restrain the growth of the public sector.
Whether it's a proposal to limit state spending growth to a combination of inflation and population growth rates; a measure that would require a supermajority vote of citizens to pass tax hikes at the ballot box; or an initiative to impose California-style Prop 13 limits on property taxes, you can count on the state's labor bosses to line up against the Average Joe in favor of feeding the government bureaucracy.
