Alaska senator criticizes Obama nuke waste policy

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is sending out mixed signals when it professes support for nuclear energy but then proposes to stop work at the proposed Yucca Mountain storage site for used nuclear fuel, a Republican senator said Monday.

WASHINGTON The government affairs arm of the nuclear industry on Monday called for President Barack Obama to convene a blue ribbon nuclear waste commission, a move that could be a first step toward forming alternatives to burying radioactive power plant fuel at Yucca Mountain.

Energy pick signed report

WASHINGTON — Steven Chu, the federal laboratory director selected this week to lead the Department of Energy, signed on to a nuclear energy report whose recommendations included licensing for a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain.
