5 simple security steps for spring travel

(BPT) - Day dreaming of satisfying your wanderlust? You’re in good company. A whopping 70 percent of travelers want to visit a new vacation destination, notes TripAdvisor. Right now is a great time to start planning spring travel, however, it’s also prime time for criminals to target tourists. That’s why planning additional security is just as imperative as packing sunscreen and sunglasses.

“It’s important to dedicate the same level of detail that goes into planning a spectacular trip to keeping your belongings safe while you travel,” says Rebecca Smith, vice president, marketing for Master Lock. Smith, along with her team of security experts at Master Lock, offer these five security tips for everything worth protecting while traveling.

1. Pack secure and smart.

Avoid over-packing by checking the destination’s weather forecast and pack accordingly. Then, keep your luggage protected with on-the-go security products such as TSA-accepted luggage locks like the Master Lock 4688D. This reliable solution is an affordable way to keep your valuables protected en route and at the hotel room.

2. Prepare for the unexpected.

If you are traveling by car, schedule a vehicle tune-up beforehand and stock up on emergency supplies such as bottled water, snacks, flashlights and jumper cables. Ensure your tires have good tread and are properly inflated, plus make sure your spare is ready.

3. Tap into technology.

With new apps geared toward travelers, getting to your destination and enjoying your surroundings is easier than ever. Download apps for weather, travel tips, directions and more. You can also securely store photos of travel documents, health records and passports through the Master Lock Vault app.

4. Wander without worry.

For less than $30, portable safes like the Master Lock SafeSpace Portable Personal Safe offer peace of mind and keep your cell phone, money, keys, jewelry, credit cards and other small valuables secure while you’re out adventuring. The compact safe features a durable cable which can be wrapped securely around a fixed object or serve as a carrying handle.

5. Set social media limits.

Sharing details of your vacation via social media? The posts could make you a target for cyber-savvy burglars. Publically posting the dates of your trip or sharing check-ins and photos tagging your location creates a security risk to your home. Instead, share via one photo album or video once you return.
