For Father’s Day: 5 pieces of advice on how to seize the day

(BPT) - For more than three generations, the Louis M. Martini Winery and the secrets to making a perfect Cabernet have been passed down from father to son. Part of the winery’s success has always been a “seize the day” mentality where hard work and bold risk-taking create world-class Cabernets. So, with Father’s Day in mind, here are five Martini family-inspired pieces of advice on how to seize the day along with the Cabernet.

1. Always have a good sport coat on hand

Keep a high-quality classic sport coat at hand — avoid trendy or loud — and you’ll always have a way to class up your game, even over jeans and a polo, for a last-minute meeting with the boss or a chance encounter with the new girl next door.

2. If you make a mistake, make it loud

Better wrong and bold than right and timid. The signature of a person willing to be their own person is a willingness to make their own mistakes without excuse (and to learn from them without hesitation). Second-generation winemaker Louis P. Martini said it and lived it — and his wines were superb.

3. Splurge every now and then, especially on others

Frugal is good, but fun is important — otherwise, what’s frugal for? A seat upgrade or a last-minute getaway makes all that work worthwhile. Even better, pick up the tab for the group. Seizing the moment for you? Awesome. Seizing it for others? That’s where the best memories come from.

4. Be curious

Best secret ever: To be seen as interesting, be interested. To be known as a great conversationalist, simply ask other people questions about themselves. People open up. Doors open up. The whole world opens up when you open up to new things. Be inquisitive and see what comes your way.

5. Find your signature wine

Life’s too short to drink something bad. Find a high-quality wine that you like, your boss respects, and your friends enjoy. Then make it yours. Insist on it.  It will bring confidence to you and quality to the moment every time you pour it.
