51s’ Ray throws four-hitter; Reed hits two homers

Robert Ray pitched a four-hitter and Jeremy Reed hit two home runs, leading the Las Vegas 51s to a 4-0 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers in the Pacific Coast League on Sunday at Tacoma, Wash.

Ray, a 6-foot-5-inch right-hander, struck out four and walked two while trimming his ERA to 3.44.

He gave up leadoff singles in the first, fifth and eighth innings, but all three runners were erased by double plays. The Rainiers' other hit was a third-inning double by Ramon Vazquez, also leading off, but he was stranded.

Reed hit a solo homer in the third inning, the 51s' first run of the series, and a two-run shot in the fifth for his first two home runs of the season.

The 51s added a run in the seventh on doubles by Brett Wallace and Brian Dopirak, the latter's third hit.

Tacoma starter David Pauley (0-3, 3.41) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. Las Vegas had been shut out 7-0 and 8-0 in the first two games of the series.

The 51s (14-17) and Rainiers (14-14) wrap up the series at 11:30 a.m. today, with Las Vegas left-hander Brad Mills (2-2) opposing Tacoma lefty Garrett Olson (1-2).

The 51s return home Tuesday to begin an eight-game home stand against Iowa and Omaha.
