Ace setting pace for Clark

Don't be surprised if Clark's outfielders start pulling out their schoolbooks or doing science homework during games.

When Jordyn McDonald is on the mound, there simply isn't much else to do.

On Friday, McDonald allowed one hit and struck out 13 Spring Valley batters, raising her area-best total to 264, as the Chargers defeated the visiting Grizzlies, 1-0.

McDonald struck out eight of 10 batters in one span, using a devastating mix of fastballs, curveballs and riseballs.

For long stretches, Clark's outfielders were left standing idle. The infielders, too.

"One game against Durango, they just expected me to strike everyone out," McDonald said. "Then when balls did get hit to them, they wouldn't expect it. They're a little better at it now, but I guess it would get pretty boring out there."

Clark coach Andrea Leavitt wasn't totally pleased despite McDonald's near-perfect performance. Though McDonald threw 74 of 102 pitches for strikes, her 28 other pitches were all over the place.

That's the danger with a confident pitcher, though. When McDonald knows the batter will swing, she'll throw a riseball that tends to keep rising and rising.

"Personally I don't think her riseball works very well," Leavitt said. "When she throws it, I am a little upset. But she loves to throw it. In her mind, if they're swinging at it, she'll pitch it."

McDonald also thinks like a pitcher at the plate, one reason she's batting .541.

"I don't usually swing at amazingly wild pitches," she said. "I watch the rotation on the ball, so I know where it's going. I am a pitcher; it is a lot easier for me."

McDonald scored the only run in the second inning. She led off with a single, the first of her two hits, and came home on a double by Marisol Salas.
