Arbor View grinds out win

Arbor View football coach Dan Barnson wanted a win Friday, but he was in no particular hurry to see his team get the job done.

Instead, the sixth-ranked Aggies took a methodical approach, slowly wearing down Cimarron-Memorial, for a 24-13 victory at Arbor View.

Christian Rodriguez rushed 19 times for 131 yards and a touchdown to lead the Aggies, but Barnson said the win came as the result of his squad's ability to knock the wind out of the Spartans.

"That's the approach we've used all year," said Barnson, whose team improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in Northwest League play. "We stick with our stuff because we believe in our stuff."

After Arbor View failed to score in the first quarter, the defense forced an interception that led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Donnie Gaskin midway through the second.

Cimarron (3-4, 3-3) mustered just 51 yards of first-half offense, and the Aggies went into the break with a 7-0 advantage.

Arbor View extended its lead on the opening drive of the second half, capping an eight-minute, 16-play drive with a 31-yard field goal by Logan Yunker to go ahead 10-0.

The Spartans' defense began showing signs of fatigue midway through the half, and the Aggies responded with several big plays.

"Our kids want to wear teams down," Barnson said. "I think that showed tonight."

Roderick Eason, who carried the ball 11 times for 106 yards, broke a 54-yard run down the left sideline to give Arbor View a 17-0 lead with 7:24 left to play.

Rodriguez made it 24-0 with a 29-yard TD run less than two minutes later.

Cimarron scored twice in the final two minutes, on a 4-yard pass from Gerard Martinez to Anthony Turner and a 1-yard Martinez plunge, to make the score respectable.

Barnson said he was pleased with the progress of his players.

"The kids are starting to believe they can do anything," he said. "They never quit because they believe in what we do."

Martinez completed 10 of 24 passes for 140 yards to lead the Spartans, who were held to 63 yards on the ground.

■ Las Vegas 64, Rancho 12 -- At Rancho, Hasaan Henderson threw five first-half touchdown passes as the No. 4 Wildcats won the annual "Bone Game" for the 15th straight time.

Las Vegas (7-1, 5-0 Northeast) scored on all six first-half possessions, rolling to a 40-12 halftime lead. Henderson threw TDs of 10, 40, 42 and 33 yards to Cameron Rogers. The other scoring reception was a 1-yarder to Farrell Victor.

The Wildcats outgained the Rams 377-126 in the first half.

Rancho quarterback Will Gosse-Gardet threw two touchdown passes: a 20-yarder to Bryson Mitchell and a 2-yarder to D'Andre Mason.

Las Vegas' defense and special teams provided its second-half points. Dee Hall returned a punt 57 yards for a score, and Travon Langston took a Gosse-Gardet interception 49 yards for a TD.

Jay Mattox nailed a 47-yard field goal, and reserve running back Michael Glenn scored on a 29-yard run to complete the Wildcats' scoring.

Henderson finished 10-for-14 for 173 yards, and Victor gained 120 yards on 20 carries. Rogers had six receptions for 161 yards.

Rancho (3-5, 2-3 Northeast) gained just 154 total yards, 28 after halftime.

■ Bishop Gorman 45, Spring Valley 0 -- At Gorman, Jarrett Solomon threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as the top-ranked Gaels (6-2, 5-0 Southwest) routed the Grizzlies.

Solomon, who completed 9 of 16 passes for 228 yards, threw TD passes of 65 yards to Evan Zeger, 43 yards to Ryan Smith and 15 yards to Joshua Hawks.

Justin Sweet, filling in for the injured Shaquille Powell, had eight carries for 148 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown run, to lead the Gorman ground attack.

Spring Valley (3-4, 2-3) came into the game averaging 37 points in its last four games but was held to 118 yards and zero points by a Gaels defense that has allowed a total of six points in its five division games.

Gorman's Jelanie Wells and Jimmy Clark each had an interception, Jalen Grimble recovered a fumble, and Ronald Lyles had a sack.

Spring Valley's Mike Dyer and Devin Dishari each had a sack.

■ Eldorado 28, Chaparral 27 -- At Chaparral, JaQuorrey Williams scored on a 2-yard keeper in overtime and Chynna Hartman kicked the extra point, lifting the Sundevils (4-3, 3-2 Northeast) over the Cowboys (0-7, 0-5) in the "Cleat Game" rivalry.

Wilber Claros made the play of the game, blocking Chaparral's extra-point attempt in overtime after Karlventz Thegenus scored on a 4-yard run.

The Cowboys pulled within 21-19 with 5:53 left in the regulation when Jacob Barr connected with Corey Hockin on a 30-yard pass on fourth-and-14. Barr hooked up with Hockin again for a 2-point conversion to tie the game at 21-21

Williams rushed for three touchdowns, threw for another and had one of the Sundevil defense's three interceptions.

■ Shadow Ridge 38, Cheyenne 20 -- At Shadow Ridge, quarterback Nick McDearmon rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs (3-4, 1-4 Northwest) over the Desert Shields (2-4, 1-4).

McDearmon scored on runs of 9 yards and 1 yard in the first half and added a 43-yard TD run in the closing seconds of the third quarter. He finished with 137 yards on 16 carries.

Shadow Ridge's Marcus Williams had a 3-yard TD, and Braden Williams' 30-yard field goal put the Mustangs ahead 25-0 at halftime.

Cheyenne's Tyler Spight had a 1-yard touchdown and caught a 19-yard TD pass from Kenneth Counts as Cheyenne pulled within 11 with four minutes left.

The Mustangs' Williams sealed the win with an 8-yard TD two minutes later.

Spight finished with 168 yards on 30 carries.

■ Del Sol 35, Green Valley 20 -- At Del Sol, Chris Marshall rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, helping the Dragons (4-4, 2-2 Southeast) put away the Gators (3-5, 1-3) in a turnover-filled game.

Marshall, who also caught a 16-yard TD pass in the second quarter, finished with 190 yards rushing on 30 carries.

Del Sol overcame three fumbles, including one on the opening kickoff, and Green Valley committed four turnovers.

Paul McKay threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns to lead Green Valley.

■ Liberty 62, Coronado 25 -- At Liberty, the third-ranked Patriots (6-1, 5-0 Southeast) scored 28 points in the second and third quarters to pull away from the Cougars (2-5, 1-4).

Kai Nacua's 1-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds left until halftime gave Liberty a 21-3 lead.

Nacua threw for another TD in the third, hitting Dakota Mayer on a 31-yard pass. Niko Kapeli added a 35-yard rushing TD, and Kimo Seau scored on a 15-yard fumble return, making the score 41-3.

Liberty had 501 yards of total offense, 439 of it on the ground. Kapeli led the team with 239 yards rushing.

The Patriots' defense held Coronado to 40 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns off turnovers.

Nate Webb threw three touchdown passes to lead the Cougars.

■ Legacy 27, Mojave 20 -- At Mojave, the Longhorns rushed for 357 yards on the night and held the Rattlers to 40 yards of offense in the second half to secure the victory.

Jordan Pinkney hit Fred Washington with a 28-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter to give Legacy (4-3, 3-2 Northwest) the win.

Legacy's L.J. McMorris scored on a 75-yard TD in the first quarter, but Trevonte Veal tossed touchdown passes to Bryant Lewis and Joe Jenkins late in the half to give the Rattlers (0-6, 0-5) a 12-7 halftime lead.

The Longhorns opened the second half with a 73-yard drive capped by Lamarus Williams' 31-yard TD run. Legacy then recovered an onside kick, which led to a 9-yard TD run by McMorris.

Veal added a 20-yard TD pass to Lewis to tie the game, but Legacy answered on the following drive with the go-ahead score.

McMorris finished with 132 yards on 20 carries, and Jordan Ireland added 123 yards on 17 attempts.

■ Silverado 38, Moapa Valley 19 -- At Silverado, Savon Moniz threw three touchdown passes and Izaiah Thurmon and Steven Scamorza each topped 100 yards rushing and scored a TD, leading the Skyhawks (4-3) past the Pirates (3-4).

Silverado's defense allowed only 26 yards rushing and recorded six sacks.

Thurmon ran for 119 yards. Scamorza had 114 and also made an interception on defense.

Moapa Valley wide receiver Hayden Cooper had 70 yards receiving and threw a 48-yard TD pass.

■ Desert Pines 49, Sunrise Mountain 0 -- At Sunrise Mountain, Derrick Shaw rushed for three touchdowns as the Jaguars (4-3, 4-1 Northeast) routed the Miners (0-7, 0-5).

Wide receiver Roesean Waggoner added a 47-yard touchdown run for Desert Pines, which compiled 285 yards rushing and scored all of its TDs on the ground.

The Jaguars' defense held Sunrise Mountain to 167 yards of total offense and didn't allow a pass completion until the third quarter.

The Miners had a chance to avoid the shutout, but Christopher Moore's pass to Cody Trapp fell incomplete in the end zone on the final play.

■ Clark 52, Pahrump Valley 14 -- At Pahrump, Chris Jackson rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on six carries as the Chargers (3-4, 3-2 Southwest) dominated the Trojans (0-7, 0-5).

Jackson had TD runs of 80 and 2 yards.

Kyle Yoder scored with two seconds left in the first quarter to give Clark the lead, and the Chargers extended the margin to 52-0 over the next 19 minutes.

Cooper Platt, Greg McKinney, Marquis McKinney and Riley McMahill added touchdown runs, and Clark's Greg McKinney hit Vance Gilbert with a 67-yard TD pass.

Pahrump lost its 25th straight game.

■ Bonanza 31, Boulder City 17 -- At Boulder City, the Bengals (3-4) scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to knock off the Eagles (3-5).

Sterling Sprau's 18-yard TD run broke a 17-17 tie, and Dasean Martin added a 54-yard TD run for the final margin.

Sprau passed for 123 yards and a touchdown. Martin rushed for 156 yards on 15 carries. He also caught two passes for 58 yards.

Boulder City's Matt Combs and Tyler Washburn each rushed for a touchdown.

■ Desert Oasis 53, Sierra Vista 22 -- At Sierra Vista, the Diamondbacks (6-2, 5-1 Southwest) scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and forced four turnovers to coast past the Mountain Lions (1-6, 1-4).

Brandon Andrews and Devin Fortenberry combined to rush for 350 yards on 23 carries, with Andrews scoring on runs of 80, 48, 6 and 4 yards. Fortenberry had TD runs of 37 yards, 13 yards and 1 yard.

■ Canyon Springs 20, Valley 6 -- At Canyon Springs, running back Malik Brown rushed for 155 yards on 22 carries, including touchdowns of 24 and 9 yards, to lead the Pioneers (5-2, 5-0 Northeast) over the Vikings (1-7, 1-4).

Valley's lone TD came on a 10-yard pass from Anthony Sanders to Xavier Malik.

■ Agassi Prep 62, The Meadows 34 -- At The Meadows, DeVonn Porter rushed for 228 yards and six touchdowns on 25 attempts to help the Stars (5-1, 5-0) take sole possession of first place in the Class 2A Southern League.

Porter scored on runs of 22, 14, 2 and 24 yards to help Agassi Prep build a 40-20 halftime lead. The senior added TD runs of 3 and 51 yards in the second half.

Tank Carter carried 15 times for 83 yards and one score for the Stars, who clinched the first playoff berth in program history. Agassi Prep handed The Meadows (4-3, 4-1) its first league loss since 2008, snapping a 14-game league winning streak.

Garrett Gosse passed for 319 yards and three scores for the Mustangs.

■ Needles 63, Mountain View 62 -- At Needles, Calif., Daric Courtwright's 10-yard run and John Ochoa's extra point in the third overtime lifted the Mustangs (4-3, 4-1 2A Southern) past the Saints.

Courtwright ran for seven touchdowns for Needles, including one with 49 seconds left.

But Mountain View sent the game into overtime on an 81-yard kick return by Justyn Andersen.

T.J. Engel found Anderson for a 6-yard pass in the first overtime and a 10-yard pass in the third overtime, with Jacob Duldulao adding a 10-yard scoring run in the second overtime.

The Mustangs answered each time with a 10-yard scamper by Courtwright.

■ Spring Mountain 86, Tonopah 26 -- At Spring Mountain, Matthew Trapp ran for three touchdowns and caught a pair of TD passes as the Eagles (5-1, 2-1 1A Southern) routed the Muckers (4-3, 1-2).

Trapp scored on runs of 28, 9 and 12 yards and hauled in scoring passes of 56 and 48 yards from Alistair Houpe as Spring Mountain built a 40-6 halftime lead and cruised to the win.

Houpe, who ran for 119 yards and scored on a 50-yard scamper, completed 13 of 20 passes for 281 yards, connecting with Jose Valle on a 58-yard strike. Houpe also returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown.

■ Pahranagat Valley 58, Indian Springs 7 -- At Indian Springs, Cody Hosier tossed six touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead the Panthers (7-0, 3-0 1A Southern) to a rout of the Thunderbirds (4-2, 2-1).

Hosier completed 11 of 14 passes for 329 yards and ran for 96 yards. Kale Leavitt caught seven passes for 227 yards, including touchdowns of 16, 57, 16 and 86 yards.

■ Virgin Valley 19, Palo Verde JV 16 -- At Mesquite, Humberto Urias threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dee Bowler and Daniel Gleave rushed for a TD to help the Bulldogs (5-1) defeat Palo Verde's junior varsity squad.
