51s hold on for win over Iowa

Josh Satin’s double in the top of the ninth broke a 5-5 tie and the 51s held on for a 6-5 win over the Iowa Cubs in a battle of Pacific Coast League first-place teams at Des Moines, Iowa.

Las Vegas’ Cory Vaughn broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth inning as he took reliever Carlos Pimentel deep for his fourth homer of the year after the 51s had squandered an early 2-0 lead and trailed 3-2 after four innings. The Cubs, who lead the PCL American Northern Division, tied it in the bottom of the eighth as former Bonanza High school star Kris Bryant led off with a home run, his 17th of the season, followed by three straight singles as Iowa pulled even at 5-5.

But Satin came through and drove in Cesar Puello, who had led off the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Matt Reynolds. Reliever Chase Bradford got the win as the former Silverado High School star improved to 3-1. Gonzalez Germen survived a two-on, two-out situation in the bottom of the ninth for his fifth save.

The teams meet at 4:35 p.m. today in the second of a four-game series.
