Mets place d’Arnaud on concussion DL, summon Centeno from 51s

The New York Mets on Thursday placed catcher Travis d’Arnaud on the seven-day concussion list after he was hit on top of his hockey goalie-style mask by the follow through of a swing Tuesday.

The Mets called up Juan Centeno from Triple-A Las Vegas to take d’Arnaud’s place. He went 0-for-2 with a walk in a 1-0 loss to the Yankees at Citi Field.

Mets manager Terry Collins said d’Arnaud sets up behind the plate unusually close to the batter, which helps him get more strike calls but might put him in more danger.

The Mets also promoted lefty reliever Josh Edgin from Las Vegas to replace veteran right-hander Kyle Farnsworth, who was designated for assignment after Wednesday’s loss to the Yankees.

■ GIANTS — San Francisco right-hander Tim Hudson will miss his scheduled start tonight against Miami because of a strained left hip.

Yusmeiro Petit, who made two recent starts in place of injured Matt Cain, will replace Hudson against the Marlins.

Hudson, 38, apparently injured himself during Sunday’s 7-4 win against the Dodgers. The problem doesn’t appear to be a major concern, but the Giants felt it would be best to give him additional rest.

Hudson is 4-2 with a 2.09 ERA in eight starts this season.

■ MARLINS — Miami ace right-hander Jose Fernandez will have Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery today, ending the season for the reigning National League Rookie of the Year.

The decision had been expected after the 21-year-old Fernandez was placed on the disabled list this week.

The operation will be done in Los Angeles. Fernandez becomes the latest in a string of major league pitchers this year who have needed Tommy John surgery.

Fernandez was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in eight starts.

Anthony DeSclafani, who started in place of Fernandez and made his major league debut during Sunday’s 13-3 win over the Dodgers, will remain in the Marlins’ rotation.

■ YANKEES — New York placed outfielder Carlos Beltran on the disabled list because a pain-relief injection did not ease the effects of a bone spur in his right elbow.

The eight-time All-Star was given a cortisone injection Monday, soon after he felt a sharp pain in his elbow while taking swings in the batting cage.

If the elbow doesn’t improve, the 37-year-old Beltran would likely need surgery, which could sideline him six to eight weeks.

■ ATHLETICS-PADRES TRADE — Oakland acquired outfielder and first baseman Kyle Blanks from San Diego in exchange for minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named.

Blanks played parts of six seasons for San Diego. To clear roster space, Oakland designated first baseman Daric Barton, its longest-tenured player, for assignment. He was hitting .158.

■ RAYS — Tampa Bay placed two-time All-Star second baseman Ben Zobrist on the disabled list because of a dislocated left thumb. Infielder Cole Figueroa was called up from Triple-A Durham.

■ BLUE JAYS — Toronto placed outfielder Colby Rasmus on the disabled list because of a sore right hamstring and recalled outfielder Anthony Gose from Triple-A Buffalo.

■ INDIANS — Cleveland placed speedy outfielder Nyjer Morgan on the disabled list with a sprained right knee. The Indians recalled infielder Jesus Aguilar from Triple-A Columbus.
