Mets summon 51s starter deGrom, but will use him out of bullpen

The Mets called up right-hander Jacob deGrom from the 51s on Tuesday, making him the first of several talented young arms expected to help solidify New York’s pitching staff this season.

DeGrom will work out of the bullpen even though he was 4-0 with a 2.58 ERA as a starter in hitter-friendly Las Vegas. The Mets placed reliever Gonzalez Germen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 6, with a virus to make room for deGrom.

The Mets’ ninth-round draft pick in 2010, the 25-year-old deGrom said pitching in relief during spring training helped him prepare for the new role. He has made 58 minor league starts without a relief appearance.

Elite prospect Rafael Montero was in the Mets’ clubhouse, too. He will make his major league debut today against the New York Yankees at Citi Field.

■ YANKEES — Right fielder Carlos Beltran has a bone spur in his right elbow that could require surgery if a pain-relief shot does not ease the symptoms.

Beltran was given a Cortisone injection Monday night, shortly after he felt a sharp pain while taking swings in a batting cage during the Yankees’ 9-7 loss to the Mets.

■ ROYALS — Second baseman Omar Infante was put on the disabled list with a lower back injury.

Infante has been dealing with disc irritation. His move to the DL was retroactive to May 7.

■ BREWERS — Outfielder Ryan Braun was activated from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined with a right oblique strain. Braun was hitting .318 with six homers and 18 RBIs when he got hurt.

Meanwhile, third baseman Aramis Ramirez was placed on the DL with a strained left hamstring. He got hurt fielding a bouncer in Saturday night’s 5-4 win over the Yankees.

■ PADRES — Outfielder Carlos Quentin was activated from the disabled list before the start of San Diego’s three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Quentin opened the season on the DL and missed the first 39 games with a bruised left knee.

■ ASTROS — Reliever Jose Cisnero will have Tommy John surgery next week, ending his season.

The 25-year-old Cisnero has a 9.64 ERA in five appearances this season.

■ PHILLIES — Manager Ryne Sandberg said a Shake Shack hamburger at Citi Field gave him food poisoning during Philadelphia’s weekend series at the New York Mets.

Sandberg said he lost 6 pounds in two days because he became sick after eating the burger. Mets first baseman Lucas Duda also said a burger from the same place made him ill.

“A couple of coaches took a bite and didn’t like what they saw and threw the rest away,” Sandberg told reporters. “I was in a rush, so I ended up putting it away.

“I’ve had one piece of toast in two days, and I’m feeling fine about that. I don’t want anything in my stomach.”
