Balanced Blue Devils to play for Maui title
LAHAINA, Hawaii -- From the wings, the lane, on alley-oops and 3-pointers, the shots fell in from everywhere for Duke.
Even with a new cast of characters, it's clear the Blue Devils are still the kings of Maui.
Putting on an offensive show near the shores of the sparkling Pacific Ocean, No. 6 Duke shot its way into the Maui Invitational title game for the fifth time with an 82-75 win over No. 15 Michigan on Tuesday.
"We hit some amazing 3s, but they were good shots," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "And we missed some good ones, too."
Austin Rivers had 20 points, Seth Curry and Ryan Kelly had 17 each, and Andre Dawkins added 14 to help Duke (6-0) extend its undefeated streak in Maui to 14 games.
The Blue Devils hit 11 of 21 3-pointers while shooting 56 percent overall and matched hot-shooting Michigan in the second half to earn a spot in tonight's title game against No. 14 Kansas, a 72-56 winner over UCLA.
Michigan (4-1) struggled early, falling behind by 16 points, and fought back by hitting 21 of 34 shots in the second half.
But the Wolverines couldn't slow the sure-shooting Blue Devils, watching shot after shot go in to slip into the third-place game. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 19 points and Trey Burke 17 points and nine assists for Michigan.
"They're not a great team to chase," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "They really know how to control the ball and limit their turnovers, and their perimeter played very well."
Rivers led the way, overcoming a few early go-nowhere drives to hit four 3-pointers, showing off some of the dazzle that made him the nation's No. 1 recruit.
Duke has been dominant at the Maui Invitational, winning four titles since 1992.
