Beck impresses — again

Former UNLV guard Romel Beck loves coming back to his alma mater. In 2007, he was sensational, leading Mexico in scoring during the FIBA Americas Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center. Sunday, he was lighting it up in Cox Pavilion, hitting five straight shots in the second quarter and helping the San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Orleans Hornets, 92-86.

Beck had 13 points in 24 minutes off the bench. He even had three rebounds, which for him, is a big number. UNLV fans will recall that Beck sometimes was allergic to glass when he played for Charlie Spoonhour and Lon Kruger.

“I love coming back,” said Beck, who was sporting a red UNLV cap. “It’s a good opportunity for me (with the Spurs) and I feel blessed to be in this position.”

Near perfect
Free-throw shooting is usually a hit-and-miss proposition at the summer league, usually more misses than hits. But credit the Spurs for making their free throws Sunday as they drained 33 of 36 tries from the stripe. George Hill was a perfect 11 of 11 from the line while Ian Mahinmi was 6 for 6.

Rockets-Timberwolves under way
The Minnesota Timberwolves are now in action against the Houston Rockets in the Cox. That means a first look at Jonny Flynn, the guard from Syracuse that Minnesota selected at No. 6 overall.

It’s also the Rockets’ third game in as many days. Fatigue could be a factor.
