California’s governor signed a first-in-the-nation law Monday that will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements — a move that could upend amateur sports in the U.S. and trigger a legal challenge.
UNLV has created the Rebel Rewards Program for season-ticker holders. Rewards are based on how many times tickets are scanned at each sport’s events.
It will receive $2 million in product in each year of the three-year deal, with the ability to purchase an additional $1 million annually.
The conference, which wants to balance control of start times for its athletic events and exposure, is in talks with several providers.
The move comes 14 months after the NCAA changed the waiver process to clear the way for immediate eligibility for all approved requests.
Nearly half in a recent survey said their schools were not following NCAA-directed guidance that calls for medical staff to make decisions independent of coaches and administrators.
The university is negotiating for a new shoe and apparel contract to replace the one with Nike that expires May 31. Nike had an exclusive negotiating window that ended April 1.
All 17 UNLV teams achieved an Academic Progress Rate multiyear score of greater than 950, well above the 930 required by the NCAA to be eligible for the postseason.
