Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, August 22
August 21, 2014 - 7:52 pm
Post Time 4 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $75,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
4 Wade - Peter Eurton barn is heating up so be wary; this gelding outran his 16/1 odds in career debut, little value tonight.
2 Bookworm - Bob Baffert baby ran green in debut, slow early, fast late; Martin Garcia takes takes over for Mike Smith.
Long Shot - 6 Fort Cady
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Hadfunlastnight - Key for me is this guy loves Del Mar; has finished in the money in 6-of-7 starts down here.
2 Money Cannon - Climbing the class ladder off a sharp win last time out; will likely sit a mid-pack trip and try to rally late.
Long Shot - 6 Apollo Ten
Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 2-year-olds
8 Arigato - Surprised to see him dropped in class after a strong career debut; owners like to win races at Del Mar so consider that.
5 Mikes Lion - Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this bottom rung; was passing horses late under William Antongeorgi.
Long Shot - 9 Lucky Shoes to Win
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $43,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Sweetrayofsunshine - Many pass on a horse like this that was vanned off; I play just the opposite, if healthy will get more value.
7 Grandiose - Still some ship and win horses this late in the meet; I don’t consider it a negative, just study the condition books.
Long Shot - 8 Agustina de Aragon
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $77,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
5 Off the Deep End - Is a short head away from a perfect 3-for-3 record; has high cheese and figures to use it again tonight.
14 Passing Game - Looks like he can draw in with two early scratches in the body; he won for $20K two races ago.
Long Shot - 12 Mal Verde
Race 6 - 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 12 feet), $90,000 CTT and Thoroughbred Owners of California Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 Rhagori - Corey Nakatani is among my favorite riders on grass; he is always patient, tries to save ground, and finishes strong.
4 Customer Base - Talented mare is a cut below grade 1, but very useful; won over Del Mar turf two years ago.
Long Shot - 7 Beatrice
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
12 Super Defense - Edge in the toughest race on the card; like the cut back in distance, extra half furlong will help too.
4 L L Cool Jo - Ran like a short horse off a year hiatus; has good back speed figures where she could move forward tonight.
Long Shot - 1 Afleet Echo
Best Bet - 8 Arigato (race 3)
Del Mar Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 13/3/$25.40; Long Shots, 8/2/$36.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 437/94/$667.80; Long Shots, 217/22/$225.80; Best Bets, 24/5/$30.40
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #8 Justice Served (6/1) in race 10 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Harbor King ran out at Saratoga. Stats - 130/79/$766.40; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
