Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, August 6
August 5, 2015 - 8:01 pm
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $36,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Always a Chance – Claimed by trainer Adam Kitchingman off a sharp win; is raised only one class level which she should be able to handle.
6 Two Step Flor – Speedball tactics from a parking lot post; Rafael Bejarano prefers to rate his mounts so see if he takes back a little bit.
Long Shot – 3 Avicil
Race 2 – 5 furlongs, Purse $39,000, Maiden claiming $62,500, Fillies, 2-year-olds
4 Amare – Morning line favoritism goes to this trainer Philip D’Amato filly; he has been using Tyler Baze more often and with great results.
1 Mitzi Winks – Rafael Bejarano had his choice of mounts and opted to ride for the white hot Doug O’Neill barn; watch the tote board for clues.
Long Shot – 3 Scarlet Emerald
Race 3 – 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $72,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
4 Know Plans – Trainer Philip D’Amato has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; there should be enough early speed dueling to set up his late charge.
1 Tribalist – Leap of faith that trainer Blake Heap has this one ready to run off a year hiatus; this is where clocker reports will help you.
Long Shot – 2 Cornbread Red
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Chasing the Heat – Has been running against quality quarterhorses so you know he’s quick; he’s a ship and win candidate which has been a strong bet angle.
4 The Cleaners – Claimed in both back to back winning races; now joins the barn of trainer Bob Hess who legs up his main man Kent Desormeaux.
Long Shot – 8 Jet Warrior
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $39,000, Maiden claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
3 Nakamoto – Been nibbling down the hillside turf course at Santa Anita; now stretches out again where he figures to be forwardly placed.
2 Big Discovery – With the turf rail out 24 feet, it makes sense to find a position in the front half of the field; no one positions better than Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – 1 Alltheleavesrbrown
Race 6 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
4 Princess Kendra – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to compete with these slowpokes.
8 Briana Jean – James Graham has not been riding poorly, but he gets middle of the road mounts right now; at some point he will get his foot in the door.
Long Shot – 5 Tiz Pleasant
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $78,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Indecise – Did everything but win in a blanket finish of the grade 3 Wilshire last time; this is an easier spot but will still have to work for the verdict.
4 Istanford – Speedball will have one way of going in here; like her chances enhanced by the turf rail out 24 feet, that always helps the speed horses.
Long Shot – 5 Famous Alice
Race 8 – 1 mile, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Miltee – Really needed him to win last time at 6/1 odds to make a nice score; still made some money with him running second, but I’m just saying what if.
3 Jens de Ville – Claimed by trainer Peter Miller and spotted nicely to win first out for the new barn; these are clearly his friends at this bottom level.
Long Shot – 6 Out of Mischief
Best Bet - 5 Miltee (race 8)
