TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
4 Cast a Doubt - Ron Ellis doesn’t claim many, but they usually turn out OK; returned from a year hiatus with a solid second.
5 Broker Brett - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to be competitive.
Long Shot - 1 Afflication
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $21,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Our Boy Benjamin - Claimed by Bobby Troeger off an OK effort; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
6 Jay’s Firetruck - Dead late closer did everything but win last time; will need some help up front to have a tired target.
Long Shot - 2 Sanibel Sid
Race 3 - 1 3/16th miles (turf), Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Topic - Was meant to be a good one but has been slow to come around; the longer they go the better her chances.
7 Indygo F M A - Tries blinkers on today after two frustrating seconds; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal throughout.
Long Shot - 5 Intoxicating Move
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Caveman Keno - This is a race a little short on talent; this colt has been well bet throughout his career.
3 Catatonic Cat - Tries SoCal for the first time; back for a price tag after a NoCal MSW in last.
Long Shot - 5 Point Happy
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $35,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Cavalletta - Has run second in all five tries at today’s distance; now trying Hollywood Park grass for the first time.
6 English Crossing - Claimed down at Gulfstream Park for Kristin Mulhall; east coast turf horses are very strong.
Long Shot - 2 Rolanda
Race 6 - 1 1/8th miles, Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
5 Rousing Sermon - His last two races have been decided by an inch either way; clearly the logical chalk in here.
3 Congenial - Was among a three horse blanket finish with the favorite in last; Cody Autrey has better stock this go round.
Long Shot - 1 Golden Itiz
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $54,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Could Be Trouble - After a fine turf debut, now stretches out in distance to one mile; suspect she’ll be OK with that.
8 Lilbourne Eliza - Gets class relief from the grade 3 Senorita for this; David Flores is winning only at 8 percent this year.
Long Shot - 6 Sweet Red Cat
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Gloryandprayer - Claimed by Dan Blacker off a good second and spotted nicely to win; tactical speed to stalk the pace.
5 Smil’n From Above - Cuts back in distance from a route for this abbreviated sprint; best stride should come in deep stretch.
Long Shot - 11 Salty Forecast
Best Bet - 4 Cast a Doubt (race 1)
Hollywood Park Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/5/$31.00; Long Shots, 8/2/$22.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Park Totals - 489/123/$779.40; Long Shots, 236/32/$330.40; Best Bets, 28/9/$41.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #1-1A entry (8/5) in race 7 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
