Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Feb. 2

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

4 Tiz the Truth - Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; did everything but win last time out.

3 Colburn - Showed improvement in last first time with Lasix; figures to find his best stride late.

Long Shot - 5 Spirited Touch

Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up

10 Stacy's Hope - His powerful late kick should be useful down the hill; closers do better with the turf rail at zero.

2 Mr. Bossy Pants - Has won 5-of-8 down the hillside turf course; horses for courses is always good down the hill.

Long Shot - 4 Drift King

Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up

8 Unsinkable Sam - Was bet down to 2/1 odds in debut, then did a classic pop and stop; claimed by Melody Conlon, watch the tote.

5 Hi Chooch - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to compete with these.

Long Shot - 10 Lethal Intent

Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, $200,000 Robert B. Lewis, 3-year-olds

2 Flashback - This is supposedly Bob Baffert's best KY Derby prospect; his margin for error is practically zero.

3 Den's Legacy - I like colt's like this that try hard every time, on any surface; gave Goldencents his money's worth in Sham.

Long Shot - 4 He's Had Enough

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds

1 Magnificent Shirl - Must respect the combo of Rafael Bejarano and Jerry Hollendorfer; saves all the ground, rallies late.

7 Tizmetizyou - Strong second in last, now returns to turf; has good tactical speed to sit a decent trip.

Long Shot - 8 Topic

Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

9 Malibu Rum - In a race jammed with early speed, I went looking for a good closer; claimed by Jerry Hollendorfer off a nice win.

2 Italian Rules - Talk about class relief, from grade 1 stakes to $40K price tag; red flag drop so caveat emptor.

Long Shot - 8 Zackn'mat

Race 7 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

6 Power Foot - Dead late closer is always at the mercy of the early pace; this is a big class drop so watch him perform.

2 Press Baron - Gary Stevens has finished in the money an awful lot in his comeback; doesn't ride many, but they are live.

Long Shot - 10 Vibrato Jazz

Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles, $200,000 Strub, 4-year-olds

7 Stephanoatsee - Graham Motion ships to SoCal once in a blue moon, so respect him today; horse can be a big player this year.

2 Fed Biz - Was all out in the San Fernando to win by a lip; speed and the rail, Mike Smith will probably send hard.

Long Shot - 4 Tritap

Race 9 - 1 mile (turf), $150,000 Arcadia, 4-year-olds and up

3 Vagabond Shoes - Euro shipper makes his U.S. debut; I'm taking a shot in a wide open affair, great race to shop for price.

14 Strong Suit - Tepid chalk last ran in the U.S. in the BC last year; he is winless since so he is vulnerable, to say the least.

Long Shot - 13 Suggestive Boy

Race 10 - 6 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up

2 Eaton Hall - Bob Baffert cull is capable of crushing these, or ending up the track; your call on a short priced favorite.

14 Et Tu Walker - Has run two good seconds in his comeback off a 5-month hiatus; will be closing into a fast pace.

Long Shot - 7 Coyote Road

Best Bet - 9 Malibu Rum (race 6)

Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/6/$48.20; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.80

Santa Anita Park Totals - 383/109/$711.60; Long Shots, 189/22/$261.00; Best Bets, 22/8/$32.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #1 Forty Tales (4/1) in race 10 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Al's Lark ran third at Aqueduct paying $2.10 to show. Stats - 19/14/$99.60; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
