Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, June 28
June 27, 2015 - 11:22 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
1 Pefiolo - You know I like the rail post in a 2-turn mile on dirt or turf; short run to the first turn and can save all of the ground.
4 Surfer Moon - Claimed two races ago by top NoCal trainer Steve Miyadi; hung on well after contesting the early pace.
Long Shot - 6 Wings of Mojave
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Provenance - Disappointed in last after an encouraging finish two races ago; offers good value but she must bring her A game tonight.
5 Elemetar - If you follow me over the years, you know how much I like cutbacks in distance; this one ran a mile turf route in last.
Long Shot - 3 Missy Mouse
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Final Step - Peter Miller barn is going all out to win the trainer title; gets major class relief from a restricted stakes for this.
4 Pat the Bear - Speedball has only shown one way of going; gets the weight off with 7-pound bug who will get simple instructions tonight.
Long Shot - 7 I B Mike
Race 4 - 1 3/4 miles, $150,000 San Juan Capistrano, 3-year-olds and up
6 Going Somewhere - Could have a nice tactical advantage as lone early speed; key will be how slow Mike Smith can go while in front.
2 Decisive Edge - Has shown a liking for Arcadia sod; marathon turf races are seldom won by deep closers, better to gallop close up.
Long Shot - 3 Golden Soul
Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Iron Fist - Gritty MSW win last out; I don’t usually like to pick recent graduates, but this one has improved nicely with each start.
3 Grazen Sky - Returns to the main track after two good tries in turf stakes; it will be his first time going long on dirt.
Long Shot - 2 I Don’t Care Who
Race 6 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
8 Air Pocket - Outran his 13/1 odds in turf debut last time; Bob Baffert colt gets reunited with Martin Garcia in here.
2 Paythebank - Did everything but win last time out in a solid second; showed good tactical speed and should save some ground.
Long Shot - 7 Pretentious
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Designated Royally - Was heavily bet in debut, which is usually wiseguy action; let’s give her another chance to live it up.
7 Cattle Queen - Tepid chalk in a really wide open affair; showed some greeness early, slow early but came fast late.
Long Shot - 2 Take It Easyplease
Race 8 - 1 1/4 miles (turf), Purse $40,000, Starter handicap $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Big John B - Gets class relief from the grade 3 Last Tycoon for this; has actually run in four straight graded stakes in a row.
5 Persuasive Paul - Loses his rider Rafael Bejarano to the chalk; has a solid turf resume and picks up Victor Espinoza, an able substitute.
Long Shot - 6 Salah Champ
Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Sweet Silver - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low level; key vote is Rafael Bejarano accepting the mount.
4 Ill Tell You What - Has finished in the money in her last 3 starts; has shown incremental improvement in each of those starts.
Long Shot - 7 Mothernaturespell
Race 10 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
12 Ya Ya Girl - Leading rider Rafael Bejarano will be favored to win the last race of this long Santa Anita meet; see you at Los Alamitos.
8 Scuti de Patuti - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Mike Pupye taking the blinkers off.
Long Shot - 13 Katy Drama
Best Bet - 3 Sweet Silver (race 9)
