TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
6 One Firm Cat - Did not duck anyone in the Generous and BC Juvenile Turf; this test has to be easier than those races.
3 Parisian Prince - Was highly regarded at Del Mar in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf; returns with Gary Stevens up.
Long Shot - 1 Dice Flavor
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
4 Shezabigbroad - Mark Glatt drops her to a class level lower than he claimed her at; had a very wide trip in last.
2 R Doubleday - Sharp win in last over lesser; takes the next logical step up, may be a useful sort at this level.
Long Shot - 1 Twirlybird
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
5 Patriot's Voyage - Bob Baffert cull can win this at 80 percent efficiency; suspect this won't be another Tweebster.
7 Three Vases - Horrible race last time at 20/1 odds; should be tighter and prepared for an improved race tonight.
Long Shot - 3 Nico Suave'
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
10 Max Cooper - Claimed by Vann Belvoir which has proven to be a lethal weapon; has tons of back class to beat these.
7 Vaundell - Speedball will have simple tactics today; Rafael Bejarano should go to the lead and improve position.
Long Shot - 6 Secret Jackpot
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
2 Belonging - Gutsy MSW try in last squeezing thru late; she chased the talented Eblouissante two races back.
1 Special Charm - Key for me is the switch to Rafael Bejarano; will save all the ground and grind it out late.
Long Shot - 5 Chestnut Moon
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
8 Macho Dorado - Huge class drop for this Mike Mitchell cull; like the cut back in distance from a mile for this.
3 Master Chef - Impeccible Santa Anita record; has won 4-of-5 Arcadia starts with one second.
Long Shot - 7 Island Sunset
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Allowance, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Sarach - Sharp MSW win last time for this well regarded Richard Mandella filly; suspect she has a high ceiling.
2 Birdlover - Trouble trip in last, still fought gamely for second; U.S. debut in Miesque was also a game try.
Long Shot - 3 Tap the Magic
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
6 Night Teller - Been stuck at this level her last 3 starts; the extra furlong today can only help her cause.
2 She's Actceptional - Tepid chalk mainly due to her trainer Julio Canani; the less starts the better at this bottom class.
Long Shot - 5 Lady Comic
Best Bet - 8 Macho Dorado (race 6)
Santa Anita Park Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$32.40; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 368/103/$663.40; Long Shots, 181/22/$261.00; Best Bets, 21/7/$28.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #1 Al's Lark (5/2) in race 2 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Bonjour Belle ran second at Tampa Bay Downs paying $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats - 18/13/$97.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
