Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Sept. 26

Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
7 Redneck Crazy – Broke thru with a big effort last time when a rallying third; key will be if he can repeat, or even improve a step, that would make him double tough.
6 Hopelessly in Love – Top NoCal trainer Steve Miyadi has an uncoupled entry for owners Tommy Town Thoroughbreds; they like to bet and they like to win.
Long Shot – 8 Sorcerer’s Wildcat
Race 2 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
6 Sudden Fame – FTS from HOF trainer Richard Mandella has strong sprinter pedigree and has been working eagerly in the a.m.; watch the tote board for more clues.
2 C. C. Zipp – The maestro Jerry Hollendorfer has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; this one has had 3 chances and been well bet in all 3, may be her turn here.
Long Shot – 5 Forever Darling
Race 3 – 6 ½ furlongs (turf), $70,000 Unzip Me, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 Curlin’s Fox – Like the cutback in distance, that’s been my philosophy now for 18 years in the Review-Journal; has also won twice down the hill, winning experience.
8 Spirit of Xian – Remember that the posts down the hillside course are kind of reversed; it is better to draw outside than it is inside, Joe Talamo sits a trip.
Long Shot – 7 Singing Kitty
Race 4 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Swiss Cheese – Good looking claim by trainer Steve Miyadi; not often you can claim a useful looking horse for $20K, see how he runs him protected and skipped Los Alamitos.
9 Hot Lightning – Off the turf angle may be a real positive here; he is also cutting back in distance, suspect Joe Talamo will sit a mid-pack trap and run over them late.
Long Shot – 5 Lambo Luxx
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 FrontRunner, 2-year-olds
4 Nyquist – Has been the prince of the 2-year-old division in SoCal; will have to answer the question of his sire Uncle Mo and the stamina to handle 2-turn distances.
8 Mr Veeder – Ghostzapper was among the most talented runners of his generation and his sons and daughters look pretty good too; this colt still has a very high ceiling.
Long Shot – 7 Swipe
Race 6 – 6 ½ furlongs (turf), Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Hawkedon – This is about as wide open a scrum as you’ll find on the card; this one was claimed by Mike Pupye four races ago and has won twice since, very productive.
2 Native Treasure – Has excelled on synthetic surfaces at Golden Gate; he’s been tried on turf and the early results are mixed, at 8/1 odds though he is very playable.
Long Shot – 4 Mal Verde
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Zenyatta, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 Beholder – This is almost not fair seeing the champ in this spot; after a crushing win in the Pacific Classic, she can win this with her A- or B+ game, much the best.
7 Wild in the Saddle – Rafael Bejarano has a way of getting the most out of every mount he rides; suspect he’ll do what’s necessary to cash a nice paycheck in here.
Long Shot – 2 Savings Account
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Chandelier, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 Songbird – If some of these short priced chalks run as good as they look on paper, there could be some short horizontal payouts; this is a brilliant looking filly.
1 Pretty N Cool – Speed and the rail will be stenciled on her forehead tonight; should be simple tactics for Martin Garcia as he’ll try to control from the start.
Long Shot – 7 Land Over Sea
Race 9 – 1 ¼ miles (turf), $300,000 Rodeo Drive, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Hard Not to Like – Spectacular rally to win the grade 1 Diana at Belmont Park in last; Christophe Clement ships out for a softer spot and another grade 1 opportunity.
11 Fanticola – If anyone can steal this on the front end, it would be this mare; the key per usual will be how slow they others will allow her to go, job of Joe Talamo.
Long Shot – 9 Sharla Rae
Race 10 – 1 1/8th miles, $300,000 Awesome Again, 3-year-olds and up
6 Imperative – Beholder was so dominant in the Pacific Classic it obscured the fact there was a race for minor awards behind her; he is interesting long shot play.
8 Bayern – Was dueled into submission with radical early fractions in the Pacific Classic; like any speedball, if allowed to set his own pace, he can be dangerous.
Long Shot – 5 Hoppertunity
Race 11 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
3 Coach Q – HOF trainer Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry, so caveat emptor; this one is very well bred and could improve a lot trying turf for the first time.
9 Canada – Has impeccable breeding for the grass and gets another chance over it; was flattered when Hollywood Don won next time out, that colt was in the FrontRunner today.
Long Shot – 8 Osceola Pond
Best Bet - 9 Beholder (race 7)
Los Alamitos Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$26.40; Long Shots, 7/1/$18.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Los Alamitos Final Totals - 162/43/$286.40; Long Shots, 80/16/$182.60; Best Bets, 10/5/$20.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #6 Mylute (2/1) in race 10 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Deep Consideration ran out at Belmont Park. Stats - 144/95/$714.90; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
