Bryce Harper sets NL All-Star voting record

Bryce Harper might be unpopular among his fellow players — who voted the Las Vegan the “most overrated player in MLB” for the second straight year in a player poll conducted by ESPN The Magazine before this season — but as far as fans are concerned, the Washington Nationals outfielder is the most popular player in the National League.

In All-Star Game voting totals released Tuesday, Harper already has set an NL single-season record with 9,224,370 votes. That total shatters the previous mark of 7,621,370 set in 2012 by San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.

Harper, 22, is batting .345 with 24 homers and 57 RBIs.

Chicago Cubs rookie Kris Bryant, another power hitter from Las Vegas, is third in the NL All-Star voting for third baseman with 3,042,439 votes. The 23-year-old Bryant, batting .282 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs, trails Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals (5.5 million votes) and Todd Frazier of the Cincinnati Reds (4.3 million).
