Cardinals player injured in collision with teammate released from hospital

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty was released from a Pittsburgh hospital on Tuesday afternoon after suffering a head injury during a collision the night before in a game against the Pirates.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny confirmed before Tuesday night's game between the Pirates and Cardinals that Piscotty was out of the hospital after being held overnight for observation.

The rookie was carted off the field on a stretcher in the top of the seventh inning on Monday night after colliding with center fielder Peter Bourjos, who caught a long fly ball to the left-center field gap hit by Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison. Bourjos' right knee then banged into Piscotty's head.

Matheny said Piscotty had several bruises, "but overall everything checked out very clean." There was no indication how long Piscotty might be sidelined.

Piscotty started the game in right field and shifted to left at the start of the seventh in a series of moves made by Mathney with the game scoreless. Jon Jay replaced Piscotty in left field.

Piscotty is hitting .310 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs in 62 games this season.
