Cavs apologize for ‘insensitive’ playoff promo video
The Cleveland Cavaliers have issued an apology after running a promotional video during Wednesday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls that made light of domestic violence.
“During a timeout at last night’s Cavaliers vs. Bulls playoff game at The Q in Cleveland, we ran a 1-minute in-arena video that was intended to be a humorous spoof on a popular commercial centered on a song and dance from the classic movie ‘Dirty Dancing.’ While the video was not intended to be offensive, it was a mistake to include content that made light of domestic violence,” the Cavaliers’ statement read.
The video showed a man — a Cavaliers fan — throw a woman to the ground after realizing she was a Chicago Bulls fan.
After throwing the woman to the ground, the man says, “A Bulls fan? I didn’t know you were a Bulls fan. I can’t believe she’s a Bulls fan.”
“When it’s playoff basketball time you have to be all in so don’t make the same mistake she made,” the video says.
The Cavaliers apologized for including domestic violence in the parody video and stated that the organization has a lengthy track record of supporting domestic violence-related causes and efforts.
