Defensive stand, Spight’s TD fuel Cheyenne over Cimarron in OT

Cheyenne's Tyler Spight scored on a 3-yard run in overtime, and the Desert Shields' defense held Cimarron-Memorial on four plays to preserve a 28-20 road victory on Thursday night.

Cheyenne took a 20-14 lead after an 80-yard touchdown run by Myloe Lewis with 4:43 to play. The ninth-ranked Desert Shields (2-0, 2-0 Northwest League) lined up to kick the conversion, but handed the ball off to Kenneth Counts, who was stopped short.

That opened the door for Cimarron, which drove 66 yards on 10 plays, capped by a 7-yard TD run by Demaryae Williams with 44 seconds remaining.

The Spartans lined up for the go-ahead extra point, but the snap appeared low and Counts blocked the kick, forcing OT.

Spight scored on the second play of overtime, taking an inside handoff and using a second effort to cross the line. Counts added the 2-point conversion run.

Cimarron gave the ball to Williams four times on its overtime possession, but he was stopped at the 2 by two Cheyenne defenders on fourth down to seal the win. Williams finished with 227 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries.

Lewis rushed for 215 yards and three TDs on 16 carries to lead Cheyenne. He had a 76-yard TD run with 44 seconds left in the first half, and Spight's 2-point conversion run made it 8-7 at halftime.

Lewis also scored on a 20-yard run with 5:34 to go in the third quarter to give Cheyenne a 20-14 lead.

A fumble recovered by Donovan Dykes set up an 11-play, 43-yard scoring drive capped by a 2-yard TD run by Williams that tied the game at 14.

After the eighth-ranked Spartans (2-1, 1-1) forced a punt, they drove to the Cheyenne 13 before penalties stalled the drive.
