Del Sol stuffs Silverado rushers

With sole possession of the Southeast Division lead at stake Friday at Silverado, Del Sol's defense pulled the rug from under the Skyhawks' vaunted rushing attack.

But Dragons senior running back Dezerick Reed found his footing just fine.

Del Sol held high-powered Silverado to less than 100 yards on the ground, while Reed rushed for a season-high 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 4-ranked and unbeaten Dragons to a 27-7 victory.

Reed, who scored on runs of 2, 6, and 2 yards, said his team was mindful of what was on the line, and knew the Dragons' defense would be key.

"You know both teams are 5-0; you know it's to try to be division champs," said Reed, who also made a sack at outside linebacker. "I expected it to be a little more of a battle, but we rolled them up.

"We have been working really, really hard for this. It feels really good."

Del Sol (6-0, 3-0) limited the No. 5-ranked Skyhawks (5-1, 1-1) to 97 rushing yards, and they had only 43 while trailing 27-0 with six minutes to play.

The Dragons finished with four sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery against a Silverado offense that entered averaging nearly 42 points and more than 350 rushing yards.

"It's the key to our success this year," Del Sol coach Preston Goroff said of his defense. "And tonight our offense finally got rolling again."

The Dragons outgained Silverado 112-34 in the first half, but led only 7-0 largely because of two drive-stopping interceptions by the Skyhawks' Dariouse Gravely.

Del Sol took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 75 yards on 11 plays. Nine of the plays were runs by Reed, who capped the drive from 6 yards out.

On the ensuing Silverado possession, Evan Weinstock intercepted a pass and raced 75 yards for a 21-0 lead.

"It was a tipped ball. I was just happy it came in my direction, and then I just ran as fast as I could," said Weinstock, who made two interceptions. "We just had a good defensive plan, and we knew they couldn't do anything on us if everyone played together."

Teran Madu-Jules led Silverado with 101 yards on 19 carries, but more than half of his yards came on the final drive.

• Bishop Gorman 72, Bonanza 0 -- At Bishop Gorman, Victor Belen rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns on only four carries as the top-ranked Gaels (7-0, 5-0 Southwest) rolled over the shorthanded Bengals (3-4, 3-3).

Belen scored on runs of 30, 38 and 53 yards. Shaquille Powell also had three touchdown runs, and finished with 94 yards on eight carries.

Bonanza played without five starters who were suspended for fighting in last week's game against Western.

The Bengals never threatened. The Gaels led 44-0 at halftime and pulled several starters early in the third quarter; a running clock was used in the second half.

Gorman freshman Jarrett Solomon completed 4 of 5 passes for 64 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown to Xavier Grimble.

Bonanza quarterback Sterling Sprau completed 6 of 15 for 65 yards, but did not play in the second half.

• Canyon Springs 34, Rancho 7 -- At Rancho, Tyler Ward passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns, leading the 10th-ranked Pioneers (4-1, 3-0 Northeast) past the Rams (1-5, 1-1).

Canyon Springs compiled 483 total yards, with Marquice Turner rushing for 98 on seven carries, including touchdowns of 54, 14 and 15.

Ward completed 11 of 24 passes, with touchdowns of 25 yards to Johnathon James and 22 to Daveon Collins.

Rancho's Harvey Yarbrough returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown with 1:39 to play.

• Cimarron-Memorial 54, Durango 7 -- At Cimarron, Stephen Nixon returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and James Poole scored on runs of 47, 32, 79 and 55 yards in the first half as the No. 7 Spartans (4-2, 3-2 Northwest) ended a four-game winning streak by the No. 9 Trailblazers (5-2, 4-1).

Cimarron amassed 492 total yards, led by Poole's 264 rushing yards on 16 carries. The Spartans put the ball in the air only seven times, but Kenny Banks completed five for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Durango running back Julio Mora was held to 24 yards on 19 carries.

• Las Vegas 56, Chaparral 6 -- At Las Vegas, the Wildcats (4-1, 2-0 Northeast) used two special teams touchdowns to pull away after a slow start.

Dee Hall scored on an 85-yard kickoff return and Dominique Smith recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.

Cameron Rogers scored on a 25-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats. Riyaadh Nevins rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Greg Tucker scored on a 12-yard run for Chaparral (0-6, 0-2).

• Sierra Vista 29, Western 28 -- At Sierra Vista, Dontrell Hall scored on a 2-yard run with 2:02 to play and ran for the 2-point conversion to cap a furious rally from a 28-0 deficit by the Mountain Lions (1-6, 1-4 Southwest).

Hall ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns. Kimurey Miles added 100 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Brian Mikol's kickoff return for a touchdown to begin the second half put Western (1-5, 1-4) ahead 28-0. The Warriors were missing seven players who were suspended for their role in a fight last week against Bonanza.

Western had a last chance to go ahead, but an interception by Sierra Vista's Gary Jacobs at the 10-yard line ended thenal possession.

• Shadow Ridge 13, Mojave 9 -- At Mojave, Nick Krueger recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and the Mustangs (1-5, 1-4 Northwest) gained their first win.

The blocked punt was Shadow Ridge's second of the game. Daryl Scott rushed for 65 yards for the Mustangs, and Michael Tootle had an 11-yard TD run.

Mojave (2-4, 1-4) drove to the Shadow Ridge 15 in the final two minutes, but the Rattlers were out of timeouts and couldn't score.

Ronald Adams rushed for 77 yards to lead Mojave. Clarence Prophet scored on a 1-yard run and Chris Gorges kicked a 22-yard field goal.

• Arbor View 57, Faith Lutheran 7 -- At Arbor View, DeMario Virgil rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns as the Aggies (4-3, 3-3 Northwest) routed the Crusaders (0-6, 0-5).

Thomas Flanagan ran 78 yards for a touchdown on Arbor View's first offensive play, and Virgil's 2-point conversion made it 8-0 after only 19 seconds.

Flanagan finished with 97 yards on four carries. Arbor View dominated on the ground with 363 yards, including Virgil's touchdowns of 61 and 27 yards.

Also scoring rushing TDs for Arbor View were Roderick Eason (19 yards), Marus Williams (3), Christian Rodriguez (8) and Joe Brooks (1). Austin Anderson threw a 25-yard TD to Demon Scurry.

Joe Portaro's 4-yard run accounted for Faith Lutheran's touchdown.

• Cheyenne 13, Centennial 6 -- At Centennial, the Desert Shields (3-4, 3-3 Northwest) turned two interceptions into scores and held the Bulldogs (4-3, 4-2) to 113 total yards.

Duhjuan Miller intercepted Centennial's Christopher Henderson early in the second quarter, setting up Kody Stahl's 33-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Butler.

Centennial answered with Javanh Sanders 2-yard run in the third quarter.

With the Bulldogs driving for the possible go-ahead score on their next possession, Henderson was intercepted by Davion Moore, who returned the ball 17 yards to the Centennial 43. From there, the Desert Shields marched the 43 yards in seven plays, with backup quarterback Chris Spencer finding Marquise Hall on a 6-yard TD on fourth-and-goal.

• Green Valley 26, Coronado 13 -- At Green Valley, Jordan Corbett completed 8 of 19 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns as the Gators (3-3, 1-1 Southeast) held off the Cougars (2-3, 0-3).

Green Valley led 17-0 at halftime on Nolan Kohorst's 48-yard field goal and Corbett's touchdown passes of 12 yards to Jarod Mielcarek and 32 to Bobby Shiroky.

Coronado answered in the third quarter with a 1-yard plunge by Kentavius Hudson. But Cougars QB Ryan Newton was sacked in the end zone for a safety, and the Gators' Treveece Jackson scored on a 29-yard run with 3:57 remaining.

Newton, who completed 23 of 53 passes for 277 yards, scored on a 4-yard run late in the game.

• Desert Oasis 32, Clark 13 -- At Desert Oasis, Elijah Mitchell scored on a 55-yard reverse, sparking the Diamondbacks (5-2, 4-2 Southwest) past the Chargers (3-5, 2-5).

Mitchell also scored on a 35-yard return of his second interception of the fourth quarter.

Brennen Stott completed 14 of 20 passes for 180 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown to Ronald Hunt. Also, Hunt threw a 35-yard TD pass to Stott after a handoff.

Hunt rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries and made two catches for 74 yards.

Andre Clay finished with 95 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries for Clark.

• Boulder City 28, Eldorado 0 -- At Boulder City, Devin Combs rushed for 150 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns, and Kyle Dimpel made two interceptions as the Eagles (5-2) blanked the Sundevils (0-6) for their second shutout.

Jack LaMarca had a 55-yard TD run, and Ryan Washburn passed for 69 yards, including a 20-yard score to Preston Swasey. Eldorado's Daytron Green rushed for 75 yards.

• Spring Valley 55, Pahrump Valley 7 -- At Spring Valley, Taj Allen rushed for 193 yards and four second-quarter touchdowns to carry the Grizzlies (3-4, 3-3 Southwest) past the Trojans (0-6, 0-5).

Fullback Austin Wallace had 128 yards and a touchdown, while the Grizzlies' defense made two interceptions and allowed 86 yards.

Dajhan Celius returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for Pahrump's lone score.

• Moapa Valley 45, Foothill 13 -- At Foothill, the Pirates (3-3) scored touchdowns on seven of their first eight possessions to beat the Falcons (3-3).

Moapa Valley quarterback Kelan Weiss' first two passes were touchdowns of 34 yards to Dillon Gordon and 37 to Matt Newton.

Weiss was 12 of 16 for 258 yards and three TDs. Newton caught five passes for 138 yards and two scores for the Pirates, who compiled 451 yards.

Foothill's Kyle Keplinger scored on a 28-yard fumble return in the second quarter and Charles Fisher on a 62-yard interception return in the fourth.

The Falcons were held to 73 yards without leading rusher Connor Afoa, who sat out with an ankle injury. Coach Martin Redmond said Afoa will likely return next week.

• The Meadows 26, Needles (Calif.) 19 -- At Needles, Calif., Garrett Gosse passed for 250 yards and three TDs to lift The Meadows (4-1, 3-0 2A Southern) over Needles (3-3, 2-2).

Gosse had scoring passes of 55 and 35 yards to Max Newman and 15 to Austin Brown. David Liu rushed for 111 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown.

Jozef Guzman rushed for 83 yards, including two 5-yard touchdowns for Needles.

• Lincoln County 54, Agassi Prep 0 -- At Panaca, the Lynx (4-2, 3-1 Class 2A Southern League) took a 40-0 halftime lead over the Stars (3-2, 2-2).

Eric Rippetoe passed for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

• Pahranagat Valley 72, Spring Mountain 18 -- At Alamo, Jensen Jones rushed for touchdowns of 14, 7 and 10 yards and the Panthers (6-0, 4-0) built a 66-6 lead in their battle for first place in the Class 1A Southern League.

Tyler Higbee added scoring runs of 6 and 5 yards in the second half. Chase Hansen caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Cody Hosier and returned an interception 37 yards for another score. Kade Wadsworth added a 6-yard TD run and had a 27-yard interception return.

For Spring Mountain (5-2, 3-1), Clarence Torres scored in the fourth quarter on a 60-yard run and a 30-yard pass from Robby Lindbloom.

• Virgin Valley 54, Sunrise Mountain 0 -- At Mesquite, Richard Vidal rushed for 88 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries as Virgin Valley (2-4) blanked the Miners (1-6).

Vidal scored on first-quarter runs of 8 and 3 yards and added a 29-yard TD in the third, helping the Bulldogs compile 326 yards on the ground.

Humberto Urias threw a 27-yard TD pass to Brandon Cohen and the Bulldogs also got rushing scores by Daniel Gleave, Jade Jensen, Trevor Griffin and Jimmy Cannon.

Sunrise Mountain was held to 105 yards.

• Tonopah 49, Henderson International 18 -- At Tonopah, Denver Otteson rushed for 199 yards and five touchdowns to carry the Muckers (2-4, 2-1 Class 1A Southern League) past the Wolverines (2-4, 1-2).

Jay Sutorius rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns to lead Henderson International.
