Dubious goal in Women’s World Cup game has bettors crying for red card

When people ask why I haven’t made a sports wager since Michael Nunn beat Frank Tate in the boxing ring at Caesars Palace in 1988 — we were told Tate was a sure thing, so everything found in the sofa cushions was wagered on Frank, only to see Frank get stopped in the ninth round — I think I will just show them the late goal from Tuesday’s Japan-Netherlands game at the Women’s World Cup.
This Dutch goal was softer than a whole crate of Charmin bath tissue.
It made the score 2-1, for Japan.
The over-under was 2.5 goals.
A “seemingly innocuous header bouncing off keeper Kaihori’s right arm and into the net” was how the Associated Press described it.
It was seemingly innocuous unless you wagered on the under.
I received an email today from a man at a Las Vegas website called pregame.com, saying an investigation was called for.
If I had to guess, it would be that this man had bet the under in the women’s soccer game, and/or on Frank Tate vs. Michael Nunn.
