ESPN screws up Kevin Ward Jr. funeral tweets
August 14, 2014 - 10:55 am
Funeral services for dirt-track racer Kevin Ward Jr. were held Thursday, and the ESPN NASCAR Twitter account is taking some heat for a couple of tweets.
“Prayers to the family of Kevin Ward Jr. as services are held today.” @ESPNNASCAR tweeted along with a link to a story about the funeral and a picture of Tony Stewart.
Yes, a picture of Stewart.
The ESPN NASCAR account also tweeted the wrong name in a separate tweet.
“Mourners attend the funeral of Tony Ward Jr.” with a picture of Stewart as well.
The ESPN NASCAR Twitter account has since deleted both tweets and tweeted an apology.
“Deepest apologies to all for getting Kevin Ward Jr.’s name and photo wrong in an earlier tweet today.” the tweet read.
Stewart struck and killed Ward last Friday during a race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in New York when Ward had exited his vehicle and was walking towards Stewart’s car on the track.
