Ex-UNLV player cited for battery against woman

Former UNLV basketball player Corey Bailey received a citation for misdemeanor battery against a woman Sunday after police were called to a disturbance at a southwest Las Vegas apartment.

The alleged victim, Laura Valley, 29, said Bailey shoved her and punched her in the nose.

Officer Jose Montoya, a spokesman with the Metropolitan Police Department, said Bailey received the citation but was not arrested.

"I guess he hit a female and shoved her," Montoya said, reading from a police report of the incident.

Bailey, 27, did not return a phone message Thursday.

Bailey played two seasons for the Rebels and recently completed his senior season, in which he started all 35 games and averaged 6.4 points. A university studies major at UNLV, Bailey needs to complete summer courses to earn his degree.

Bailey has been playing for the Las Vegas Stars of the International Basketball League since the Rebels' season ended.

Montoya said Bailey is to appear in Las Vegas Justice Court on July 1. Valley said she also was cited for misdemeanor battery against Bailey and has a July 1 court date.

Montoya said the victim of the assault has to decide to prosecute for Bailey to be convicted. Montoya said a judge can determine to levy a punishment if guilty. He said typical punishment for a misdemeanor battery charge is a fine between $150 and $350, and required attendance in an anger management course.

Valley said she intends to prosecute. She said she asked security at the apartment complex to call police after the alleged incident. Witnesses claimed to have seen the assault, Montoya said.

Valley, a middle school teacher and basketball coach, said she was dating Bailey, and the witnesses were two other women who also claimed to be dating Bailey.

"He was lying and cheating on three girls," Valley said. "I'm the one who found everything out."

Valley said the four met Sunday night at her apartment, where Bailey arranged the meeting in an attempt to clear up the matter, and an argument ensued.

"He hit me in the face. It was a punch ... right on the bridge of my nose," Valley said. "He didn't punch me full out because both of the girls were trying to stop it. He shoved me down. I fell down, and I was on the ground. I don't go down easily, so I was kind of shocked when I was on the ground."

Valley, who played basketball for four years at the University of Montana, said she is waiting for X-rays to determine if her nose is broken.

"I'm mad because I have headaches and my face hurts," she said.
